Aveda’s About-Face Approach to Exfoliation

With winter approaching, dry skin is on the rise, therefore we must consider what we are doing to exfoliate.  Find out more about Aveda’s approach to exfoliation as stated in the Spa Quarterly Newsletter:

“Q: What exfoliation ingredients does Aveda use and why?

A: Physical friction through touch, movement and massage is enough to remove surface layers of skin—simply walking in sand will exfoliate the feet. Particles ranging from rough and sharp to small and smooth can fine tune the degree of exfoliation. All of Aveda’s physical particle ingredients come from botanicals, such as bamboo, jojoba beads and walnut shells.

Aveda products rely on two naturally derived exfoliation ingredients, each with a different mechanism of action—salicylic acid and glucosamine. Combined with physical friction through touch, movement and massage, they can provide the benefits associated with microdermabrasion and glycolic acid peels.

Salicylic acid exfoliates by breaking the desmosome bonds between keratinocytes, allowing skin cells to be released. Most salicylic acid on the market today is synthesized from petroleum derivatives; however, Aveda’s salicylic acid is naturally derived from wintergreen. Glucosamine is a natural molecule that gently reduces cell adhesion by speeding up cell turnover and reducing cell reaggregation after the desmosome is broken. The most common source of glucosamine is shellfish; however, Aveda’s non-animal glucosamine is derived entirely from fermentation of specific fungi.

These naturally derived ingredients have helped Aveda products achieve clinical performance in smoothing and radiance on par with such procedures as microdermabrasion and glycolic acid peels, but with less of the associated redness and irritation.
